We’ve been hard at work getting our new showroom upgraded and well stocked in anticipation of a busy 2010-2011 heating season.

We have brought in a couple of nice electric fireplaces as well as gas fireplaces & inserts and gas stoves. We have held to our specialty also which is wood stoves and inserts.

It has been a lot of work moving but we are finally finished. Moving home is hard enough but moving a stove store at the same time is brutal! Thanks to all our friends and customers who have helped us make this transition.

We’re about the task of getting the word out so everyone knows where we are now so tell your friends and neighbors that Jack’s is open in a new larger showroom with more stoves and firepalces than ever before.

One thing I am loving is all the space we have in the new location! We have just finished (or almost finished) construction on the workshop. One of the walls of the workshop will serve as a fireplace insert display. The photo shows 3 gas inserts fitted with 5 more to be installed next week.

We will be adding many floor displays to show the many stoves and fireplaces we offer.

We expect to be open by mid-April although we will continue working on displays up until the heating season begins. It seems strange to be talking about next fall when Spring is just now coming in!

The warm weather will come and go quickly so it is not too early to start thinking about a more efficient way of heating and saving money on energy costs.

As most of you already know, Black Mountain has been my home for the past 16 years or so and I truly love it here and especially all the people I have had the privalege to meet and serve. I suppose I should make it clear up front that even though we’re moving the shop, we will still be serving the area and maintaining our customers needs.

Beginning March 15th or so we will be moving into a larger showroom in downtown Rutherfordton, NC. That’s just about 40 miles away so we’ll still be close by to serve our many friends in and around Black Mountain.

We will be located at 126 W. Court Street, Rutherfordton, NC 28139.

I’ve already been asked, “why you moving Jack?” so let me go ahead and let everyone know what’s going on with my decision to move from Black Mountain.

There are numerous motivating factors. I have actually been looking at Rutherfordton for many years as a location for a stove shop. Years ago when I was working with Bob at Black Mountain Stove & Chimney, we would kick around ideas of opening another store and Rutherfordton is a place I liked a lot. 

REASON 1: Rutherfordton is far enough away to be distinct but close enough to still ensure the Western North Carolina mountain culture is a part of my life and work. I am a native of these mountains and would never want to leave them or the fine people here.

When my good friend and former employer Bob Orr sold his store a couple years ago, I did not move with the new owners and opened my own store. It has been great and being in Black Mountain has been as wonderful as ever. I rented a small space from Bob and it has served well for actually getting my own place going.

Now Bob has re-acquired his store and is bringing Black Mountain Stove & Chimney back online. This is great news! Bob is an old stove man and I kinda knew he couldn’t really retire from something that is in your blood. As you might already be thinking, renting my store from Bob who is now a block away with his own store again might be a little odd for 2 old friends like us. You’re right! Bob and I have been together way too long to be competitors, so we’ll put a little space between us and make more happy customers over a broader area.

REASON 2: Black Mountain is in good hands again with my friend Bob who started his shop here over 30 years ago. If it weren’t for Bob and Black Mountain Stove & Chimney, I likely would have never been in Black Mountain anyway. I can better hope for Bob’s continued success if I take my next step in Rutherfordton.

The other has to do with our industry. When you’re dealing with world-renowned products, these manufacturers are very strict on lots of things. One of the biggest things they want is professional representation. You can’t just sell something because you want to or even because you are qualified to. You also commit to seve and support your “territory”. Buncombe and Haywood county is saturated and offers no opportunities for me with the brands I want to represent. Rutherfordton offers me an open territory where I can represent manufacturers that want me to represent them. This is a very critical part our business. The demographics check out good. Manufacturers are already beating on me to bring them in and I will have a suitable location to do so. It’s just a logical business move for me to move “down the mountain” a little bit to open up many options for the business.

REASON 3: Territorial opportunities.

In closing I want to assure everyone in our current market that I WILL CONTINUE TO SERVE THIS AREA. We will maintain our local Asheville phone number and will remain in the phone book. Just give us a call when you need us. Remember, we’re only 40 miles away.

Even after more than 15 years in the business, I am continually amazed at the technology being poured into something as seemingly primative as a wood heating stove.

Even though the EPA started regulating wood stove emissions in the late 80’s, the most significant improvements are just coming about in the industry. Today, the most common question I hear from shoppers is, “what is the meaning of catalytic vs. non-catalytic when referring to wood stoves?”

I can tell you, the whole catalytic / non-catalytic conversation is terribly overcomplicated by almost everyone associated with the industry.

Simply put, all stoves I sell are EPA certified for low emissions. Catalytic or non-catalytic ONLY relates to HOW these stoves achieve their secondary combustion to meet these strict requirements. A catalytic stove will pass exhaust through an active catalytic combustor whereas a non-catalytic stove will introduce air in a special way to cause secondary combustion to occur.

The quick-fix back in the late 80’s and early 90’s was to simply add a catalytic combustor and minor design modifications to a simple wood stove. This worked to reduce emissions, and for many years was the standard in efficiency.

Some manufacturers have failed to evolve past the early 90’s with their designs and continue to offer a simply designed stove with a catalytic combustor.

Some manufacturers have never offered a catalytic stove or did so only briefly in favor of a high-efficiency, non-catalytic design. Most manufacturers have evolved past catalytic combustors and now offer clean burning non-catalytic designs while the best of the best may offer your stove either way you like. Vermont Castings is just such a manufacturer.

Personally, I am in favor of non-catalytic designs due primarilly to their lower cost of ownership. Catalytic combustors are sacrificial elements and will need replacement after 5-10 years depending on how much you use your stove and how well you maintain it. Heating primarilly with wood, you’re going to like changing your combustor every 5 years to keep your stove working like new.

As far as design function goes, generally you can expect that a well-designed catalytic stove will offer the highest efficiency and cleanest burning out of the box. MOST, but not all non-catalytic designs are relatively simple. MOST non-catalytic stoves will achieve secondary combustion (burning of smoke and emissions before they leave the stove) in the top of the stove by introducing super-heated air at a precise volume through air tubes or an airbox.

There is ONE manufacturer that is miles ahead of anyone else when it comes to innovative non-catalytic design. Since introducing the patented EVERBURN system to the market, Vermont Castings has set a new standard by which non-catalytic stoves are measured.
